See Also: Destroy
Original Word: καταλύω (kataluo)
Strong's Number: G2647 (Greek)
Definition: to destroy, abolish, overthrow
Matthew 5:17
KJV: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
NKJV: Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
NIV: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Interpretation: Jesus corrects the misunderstanding that He came to destroy the law. He came not to abolish it but to fulfill it. The verse shows that Jesus completes the law rather than removing it. Fulfilling the law means bringing it to its intended purpose. Jesus does not set aside God's commands but completes them. The law finds its fulfillment in Jesus. Those who follow Jesus honor the law by recognizing its completion in Him. The verse teaches that Jesus establishes the law rather than removing it.

2 Corinthians 3:13
KJV: And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
NKJV: And not as Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away.
NIV: We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away.
Interpretation: Paul contrasts the new covenant with the old covenant. Moses veiled his face so Israel could not see the fading glory. The old covenant was passing away, but Moses hid this from the people. The verse shows that the old covenant was temporary. Its glory was fading and would be replaced. The veil represents the temporary nature of the old covenant. The new covenant in Christ brings permanent glory. Unlike Moses, Paul and the apostles have no veil because the new covenant is permanent. The verse teaches that Christ brings what is permanent, not temporary.

Ephesians 2:15
KJV: Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
NKJV: having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,
NIV: by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,
Interpretation: Christ abolished the enmity between Jews and Gentiles by removing the law's dividing wall. He set aside the law of commandments in His flesh. His purpose was to create one new humanity from two groups. The verse shows that Christ removes barriers between people. The law that separated Jews and Gentiles is abolished in Christ. Christ creates unity where there was division. The new humanity in Christ replaces the old divisions. The verse teaches that Christ brings people together through His work on the cross.
