KJV:
And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
NKJV:
Then He taught, saying to them, "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it a 'den of thieves.'"
NIV:
And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'
Interpretation:
Jesus teaches that the temple should be a house of prayer for all nations, not a den of thieves. The verse shows that using God's house wrongly is sacrilege. Making it a den of thieves robs God of the worship due to Him. The verse teaches that sacrilege prevents God's house from serving its purpose. When we use sacred things for wrong purposes, we commit sacrilege. God's house must be kept holy for its intended use.
